Bulgaria has extensive hydrocarbon rich resources but lacks development of oil and conventional natural gas, which is currently imported from Russia.
Much of the nation’s hydrocarbon resources consist of unconventional gas locked in shale, coal beds and tight gas sand reservoirs.
Several of Bulgaria’s coal deposits, however, consist of bituminous coal that has proven to be gassy and is therefore prospective for coalbed methane. Development of this coalbed methane could result in a significant boost to Bulgaria’s energy economy.
