Bulgaria has extensive hydrocarbon rich resources but lacks development of oil and conventional natural gas, which is currently imported from Russia.
Much of the nation’s hydrocarbon resources consist of unconventional gas locked in conventional and unconventional gas oil deposits.
Several of Bulgaria’s coal deposits, however, consist of bituminous coal that has proven to be gassy and is therefore prospective for methane which has migrated to the sandstone formations. Development of this resource could result in a significant boost to Bulgaria’s energy economy.
